Born and raised in a poverty-stricken mountainous region of Portugal by his mother, Herman Alves turned his life around time and time again, striving for business success until he realized that happiness was not in receiving but rather in giving.

Alves has more than 25 years of experience in such varied industries as hospitality and restaurants, real estate, information technology, telecommunications, entertainment and tourism. He is now a marketing consultant and motivational speaker.

Alves is past president and active board member of Share the Warmth, a charity that supplies meals, school supplies and scholarships to underprivileged children in Montreal. He is past board member of the TELUS Community Investment Board as well as past president and current board member of the Rotary Club of Montreal that funds humanitarian projects around the world. He organizes the Table of Hope gala, whose objective is to raise over $1 million to benefit Share the Warmth.

  • Breaking Stones is a book about hope, about overcoming all odds, about coming to terms with one’s self, and, above all, about the joy of giving back.
